Researchers analyzed 46 cohorts with up to 1.14 million participants and identified 1,260 variants associated with the Big Five personality traits. Common variants explained about 4.8% to 9.3% of measured differences for typical trait measures, rising to about 13.3% after accounting for measurement reliability.
The results describe patterns across large populations and cannot reliably read an individual's personality from DNA. Environment, life experience and personal choices remain substantial influences, and the authors cautioned against using the findings to assess individuals.
Genes contribute to personality, but they are only part of the picture. DNA cannot currently predict an individual's character.
