The Keep It Wool project tested two 10-by-10-metre wool covers beside a conventional synthetic cover. Initial observations found comparable local protection, although the project says the collected data still needs analysis.
Protective covers currently reach only about 0.02% of Switzerland's glacier area. The project itself says that even large-scale covering would not halt glacier loss and that reducing greenhouse gas emissions remains the main long-term response.
Wool may be a biodegradable alternative for protecting small, selected areas of ice. It is not a way to save entire glaciers.
