Yes, at the global level. A major new assessment concludes that increasingly frequent marine heatwaves and bleaching events are shortening the time coral reefs have to recover before the next disturbance.
The report analyzed 21.1 million observations from 36,886 reef sites across 124 countries and territories. It found that global hard coral cover in 2020-2024 was 9.5% below the 1980-2009 average and that major bleaching events now occur about every five to six years.
This does not mean bleached coral is automatically dead or that recovery is impossible everywhere. Global hard coral cover rose about 6% between 2017 and 2019, showing that reefs can regain cover when temperatures ease and other pressures are reduced, but regional outcomes vary.
Coral reefs can still recover, but the recovery window is shrinking. More frequent heat stress is causing new losses before many reefs can fully rebound.
