Explanation
No. Iceland can no longer accurately be described as a country where mosquitoes have never been found outdoors. Its Natural Science Institute confirmed mosquitoes collected in October 2025, overturning the familiar mosquito-free claim.
The institute identified three Culiseta annulata specimens collected at Kiðafell in Kjós between October 16 and 18, 2025: two females and one male. Iceland Review separately reported the discovery and the identification by the institute's entomologist. Subsequent monitoring also addressed a Culex population in a stable in Ölfus.
Finding mosquitoes does not establish that they are widespread or permanently established across Iceland. An August 28, 2026 institute update reported no mosquitoes in the latest sampling at the Ölfus stable after control efforts, but said longer monitoring was needed to assess lasting success. Local non-detection does not restore the blanket claim that Iceland has no mosquitoes.
Key takeaway
Mosquitoes have been confirmed in Iceland; their distribution and long-term establishment are separate questions.
